Spider

running my hand across the fence, I stop for a second at a slight scratch on one of the veins on my hand. I shrieked, almost fainted, struggled to the main office and between sobs told the receptionist of the black spider I would never forget – it treaded on my hand as though it had the right…it scratched the surface of my hand and left a mark on my conscience – I would say forever – but it doesn’t cut it.

there was no bandage for the slight mark you could hardly notice. I heard the receptionist giggle and I saw the lack of empathy in her eyes. I was disappointed; heartbroken that she could not feel the pain and to my disadvantage she couldn’t see the pain I was feeling – the tingly, sharp pain of the iddy biddy bristles of the spider’s legs.

head down, I dragged my feet, held the hand with the mark you could not see raised as though uncomfortable. it changed me, but not right away. It took years for the slight poison to reach my nerves. I never told my parents about the spider as though it warned me…if it could speak, it would have said “I’ll haunt you in your dreams.”

tribute to dickinson

I have never liked
parenthesis this much
or words, or numbers
with or without the theme

of coming close to death
life closed twice,
and windows fail
dashes everywhere
Capitals anywhere

your craft –
my supper
your divine
my mirth

These are a Few of my Favourite 'ings

sitting breathing knowing
feeling allowing sharing
cultivating learning illuminating
approving accepting believing
discovering interpreting loving myself
Being bleeding showing
instilling creating indulging curiosity

The Simple Things

The simple things, the people, the moments
The mug with the coffee that you held in your hands
While you spoke so intently about your day and random events with your friends
The taste of chocolate as it lingers in your mouth, waiting in the rain for the bus
How you listen to the ringing before the person picks up
You untangle the tangles gently with your comb – brings back memories of your childhood

Making your bed just before you open the window to let the sun in
Rushing down the stairs to greet the aroma of breakfast
Smiling to yourself when you’ve thought of something your loved one mentioned
Buttoning then unbuttoning, tying and then untying
When you’re conscious of what you’re doing – these simple moments help you
Engage in the present – adding more minutes to your day
And adding to memories one simple moment at a time.

solitude

In solitude I retrieve old thoughts
I realize what I cautiously leave out in a crowd
Looking outward and taking deep breaths, I let go of myself
So that I may be free

Grey skies with peaks of sun adorn my creativity and passion within
Instead of voices and faces engaging in my presence
Nature and her beauty guide my senses

I reach within myself so freely in solitude
All I need is this quiet of nature
How beautiful it is to discover yourself and praise the moments
That helped you want to rise up
Every bit of me feels as light as a feather
Peace, I feel
And all my questions remain unanswered.
